Surveying Technicians (more commonly referred to as Survey Party Chief) - Adjust and operate surveying instruments, such as the electronic theodolite and electronic distance-measuring equipment (total station), levels, and GPS, and compile notes, make sketches and enter data into computers and portable electronic data collectors.
Detailed Job Description
Surveying technicians assist surveyors. Together, they collect data and make maps of the earths surface. Surveying technicians visit sites to take measurements of the land.
Duties
Adjust and operate surveying instruments such as prisms, theodolites, electronic distance-measuring equipment, levels, and GPS equipment.
Perform calculations to determine earth curvature corrections, atmospheric impacts on measurements, traverse closures and adjustments, azimuths, level runs, and placement of markers.
Record survey measurements and descriptive data using notes, drawings, and sketches.
Search for boundary monuments and evidence of boundary locations.
Position and hold the vertical rods, or targets, that theodolite operators use for sighting to measure angles, distances, and elevations.
Lay out grids, and determine horizontal and vertical controls.
Compare survey computations with applicable standards to determine adequacy of data.
Set out and recover stakes, marks, and other monumentation.
Direct and supervise work of subordinate members of surveying parties.
Conduct surveys to ascertain the locations of natural features and man-made structures on the Earth's surface, underground, and underwater using electronic distance-measuring equipment and other surveying instruments.
Cutting bush, climb steep hills while carrying equipment and materials (50 pounds min.) and all other tasks as assigned.
Must be able and willing to work in difficult terrain and tropical environment.
Must be able and willing to drive automobiles on the left-hand side of the road and in accordance with local laws.
Regular work hours are 7:30 to 3:30. Must be available and willing to work overtime. Must be available and willing to occasionally work weekends, nights, and holidays.
