• Age: 18 years or older
• Skills: Basic computer knowledge, good communication, and research skills
You will begin with wedging, which prepares the clay and makes it ready for use. You will learn the main design principles needed to create balanced and beautiful ceramic pieces.
You will explore hand building in three stages. This includes coil building, slab building, the lump method, and pinching. You will also learn molding and casting to create more complex and consistent forms. These techniques help you shape clay without a wheel and give you full creative freedom.
You will learn the basics of wheel work, including centering clay and throwing different forms. These skills help you create bowls, cups, vases, and other round shapes with clean lines and even walls.
Glazing
You will learn how to mix and apply glazes to create smooth, vibrant, and professional finishes. You will explore different techniques like brushing, dipping, and layering, and understand how colors and textures change during firing. By the end, you will confidently achieve clean and polished ceramic surfaces.
You will make ceramic tiles, paint them, and learn different staining methods. You will also learn how to test and create glazes, which add color, shine, and texture to your final pieces.
You will understand the full firing process. This includes bisque firing, glaze firing, and using the kiln safely. You will learn the difference between low and high temperatures through the 900°C and 1100°C firings. The final firing completes your ceramic piece and reveals the finished glaze.
You will build your own concept for the final project and create a complete ceramic piece using the skills you learned. After the work is completed, you will receive feedback in the final critique and prepare your piece for display.
This program is perfect for beginners, hobbyists, aspiring ceramic artists, or anyone who wants to learn pottery from start to finish.
By the end of the program, you will be able to hand build and wheel throw functional ceramics, create and apply glazes, operate a kiln, and present a finished ceramic project with confidence.
